Tribal Resistance Gallery

Forests of Defiance

Tribal Resistance Gallery feature

Long before and during 1857, India's tribal communities mounted some of the fiercest resistance against colonial expansion. This gallery recovers those stories — the Santhal hul of 1855, the Bhil rebellions of central India, the Gond uprisings of the Deccan — and shows how they fed into the broader fire of 1857.

Artifacts, oral histories and field recordings sit alongside photographs of the landscapes where these revolts unfolded.
